What is xat?

xat is an online chat platform where you can talk in real time, create your own group (chat), use animated avatars (smilies), add extra features with powers, and customize everything.

Since 2006, millions of users have used xat for community chats, games, support, friendship and entertainment. Each chat has a unique address, for example: xat.com/MyChat.

How to create a xat account

To use most features, you need a registered account. Guest accounts exist but are limited.

  1. Go to xat.com/login
  2. Enter any chat as a guest or click Register
  3. Choose a username (10–18 characters: letters and numbers)
  4. Create a password (minimum 3 characters — do not use your email password!)
  5. Enter a valid email for password recovery
  6. Confirm you are 14+ and accept the terms
  7. Click Register and confirm your email if asked
Tip: Write down your numeric ID (shown on your profile). It helps with support and identification.
Important: xat never asks for your email password. Beware of suspicious links — read about Phishing on the wiki.

How to create a chat (group)

Any registered user can create a chat for free. The chat name becomes part of the URL.

  1. Go to xat.com/chats — Create group
  2. Choose a chat name (no spaces, e.g. MyChatEN)
  3. Add a short description of what the chat is about
  4. Select a main language
  5. Pick tags/categories if available (helps discovery)
  6. Confirm — your chat will be at xat.com/ChatName

After creating

  • You become Main Owner automatically
  • Enter the chat and click the pencil/edit icon for settings
  • Invite friends by sharing the chat link
  • Set rules, moderators and appearance in group options
Name taken? Try variations or use the short name store for premium names.

How to configure your chat

As owner or authorized moderator, you can customize almost everything in the group.

Appearance

  • Background — image or background color
  • Buttons (tabs) — extra links on the side of the chat
  • Custom CSS — advanced styling (may require a power)
  • xatframe — visual frame around the embedded chat

Moderation and rules

  • Set visible chat rules for visitors
  • Configure blocked words and filters
  • Require registration to speak
  • Configure caps, links, flood and spam limits

Embed on a website

Copy the embed code in group settings to put the chat on your site, blog or forum. It runs inside a responsive iframe.

What are Powers? Popular

Powers are special features you buy in the xat store. They unlock smilies, effects, moderation tools, customization and more.

Types of powers

Smiley Powers Add animated smiley packs (anime, animals, effects, etc.)
Function Powers Utilities: transfer xats, convert days, zoom, status, etc.
Group Powers Assigned to the chat — affect all visitors (rankpool, gcontrol)
Game Powers Games inside the chat (doodle, snake, etc.)
Epic / Limited Limited editions, often rarer and more valuable
Aces Monthly subscriptions with exclusive powers — see xat.com/aces

Using a personal power

  1. Buy the power in the store with xats
  2. It appears in your power inventory
  3. In chat, type the smiley code or use the smilies menu
  4. Some powers use specific commands (see each power’s wiki page)

Assigning a power to your group

  1. Open chat settings → Group powers
  2. Select a power from your inventory
  3. Click Assign to the group
  4. Configure the power in chat settings

Xats and Days — xat currency

What are xats?

Xats are xat’s virtual currency. Use them to buy powers, short names, promotions, gifts and more.

What are Days?

Days (subscriber days) are subscription time. With active days you can:

  • Use most personal powers
  • Transfer xats and powers to other users
  • Use premium features like marriage (marry), transfer, etc.

How to get xats and days

  • Buy — xat.com/buy (PayPal, card and other methods)
  • From friends — user transfers (requires days)
  • Promotions and events — occasional xat campaigns
  • Quiz — complete the login quiz for free Tickle power
Never buy xats from unofficial resellers. Use only xat.com/buy to avoid scams.

Ranks and moderation

Each user in a chat has a rank that defines what they can do.

Rank Symbol Main permissions
Guest (none) Visitor — may chat if allowed; no moderation powers
Member Star Permanent member — keeps rank after leaving
Moderator Person icon Mute, kick and ban users; moderate the chat
Owner Crown Promote mods, partial settings, longer bans
Main Owner Gold crown Full control — chat owner, edits everything

Basic moderation commands

  • /k — kick (temporary remove)
  • /m — mute (cannot speak for X hours)
  • /g — ban
  • /r — rank (promote/demote)

Click a user’s name or avatar in chat for moderation, transfer and profile options.

xat.me profile

Every registered user has a public page at xat.me/YourName — your xat business card.

What to add

  • Custom avatar and look
  • Bio (about me)
  • Social links
  • Media — embedded photos and videos
  • Status and marriage (with marry power)

How to edit

  1. Go to xat.com/editme or Edit in the account menu
  2. Change avatar, colors, fonts and layout
  3. Save — changes appear instantly on xat.me

How to promote your chat

New chats need visibility. Official xat options include:

  • Promoted Groups — xat.com/promotion
  • Featured / Popular — active chats on the homepage lists
  • Ads — platform banners at xat.com/ad
  • Social media — share xat.com/YourChat on Discord, Instagram, etc.
Growth tip: Active moderators, clear rules, regular events and a clear theme keep visitors coming back.

Group powers — quick guide

Group powers are assigned to the chat, not the person. All visitors are affected.

Popular group powers

  • gcontrol — advanced moderation and settings
  • rankpool — separate pools by rank
  • boot — send a user to another chat
  • announce — automatic welcome messages
  • link — turn words into clickable links
  • blast — visual effects on kicks/bans

Assign and remove

In Edit chat → Group powers, assign from your inventory. Use Unassign to remove. Group powers stay active while assigned (some require days).

Security and account protection

Account protection

In account Settings, set protection level:

  • Level 1 — Country — email confirmation if logging in from another country
  • Level 2 — ISP — protection by internet provider
  • Level 3 — IP — maximum protection by IP address

Avoid scams (phishing)

  • Never enter your password outside xat.com
  • Beware of users asking for xats, powers or “deals” in private chat
  • Do not click suspicious short links promising free xats
  • Enable account protection and use a secure email

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do I need to pay to create a chat?

No. Creating a chat is free. You only pay for powers, promotion, premium names or xats.

I lost my password. What do I do?

Use Lost password/username at xat.com/login with your account email.

Can I change my username?

Yes, once every 7 days in Settings → Change name. You may lose your old name if someone else registers it.

What are ID and K2?

ID is your permanent unique number. K2 is a security key — never share it.

How does marriage (marry) work?

With the marry power and active days, you can marry another user. A ring shows on both xat.me profiles.

Chat down or won’t load?

Check the name, try another browser, clear cache or check forum/support.
